Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegria Hude
Directed by Thomas Kail
Synopsis:
In the Heights is a quintessential New York musical about a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. The music pulses with the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition.
NEW YORK TIMES:
"Although you may lament the efficient but mechanical way these story lines are developed and resolved, staying tuned will be a pleasure if you have any affection for the bubbly or sultry sounds of Latin music. That is saying plenty, for when this musical erupts in one of its expressions of collective joy, the energy it gives off could light up the George Washington Bridge for a year or two. "

NEW YORK POST:
"Broadway's search for the new, gritty musical - the next "West Side Story," "Hair" or "Rent" - continues, trying to discover something that talks today's talk, sings today's songs. Unfortunately, "In the Heights" doesn't stray more than a brief subway ride from middle-age Broadway's comfort zone. "

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS:
" Despite its shortcomings, director Thomas Kail's production, which has changed slightly from last year's Off-Broadway run, has its pleasures. What it lacks in story and believability it makes up for in a vibrant rap- and salsa-flavored score, spirited dances and great-looking design. And the cast is sweeter than dollops of dulce de leche. What would have been really sweet: A show that had something to say that resonated beyond the 181st St. subway stop."

THEATERMANIA:
"More important, without question, this extraordinary show will turn out to be the most important and influential musical of the season. "

VARIETY:
"What makes "In the Heights" so unique, however, is that despite the driving pulse of its Latin-American rhythms, blending hip-hop, rap, jazz, pop, salsa and merengue, this buoyant musical also nods reverently to the traditions of the show tune. From its catchy opening number, which tosses in references to Cole Porter and Billy Strayhorn while swiftly introducing a large gallery of key characters and placing them within a vividly drawn community, the musical's plucky marriage of youthful freshness and lovingly old-fashioned craft is hard to resist. NEW YORK SUN:
"Meanwhile, with the deeply flawed and deeply pleasurable "In the Heights," this town just got a tiny bit more wonderful. "

TIME OUT NY:
"If Quiara Algría Hudes’s book were up to the standard of the score, we might have a classic on our hands; unfortunately, the musical’s older characters are limned in unadulterated cliché, and the contrived second act slows the show’s circulation to drips. But when In the Heights is at its best, the talented ensemble forges a genuine sense of community, and turns Broadway into a block party to remember. "

AMNY:
""In the Heights" was created to celebrate a world on the verge of extinction. That's why it's such a joy to behold and a must-see musical."
